First built in the 8th century, Saint Elia’s Basilica stands in the Suppentonia Valley between the old town of Castel Sant’Elia and the Santa Maria ad Rupes sanctuary. Its portal, Cosmatesque elements, marble columns and Byzantine-inspired frescoes form an artistic and spiritual itinerary of exceptional value.
Frescoes and architecture
The apse depicts Christ the Redeemer and twelve lambs symbolising the apostles. Below, the procession of the Virgins belongs to an 11th-century cycle. The side walls preserve scenes from the Apocalypse of Saint John.
